World Ocean Day is June 8th and I’m happy to partner with adidas to share with you their Parley line. adidas Parley uses plastic from the oceans and creates sustainable footwear and apparel. Many of you know that I’ve personally be working on sustainability within my own household. This is an ongoing process and while I’m not zero waste, I hope this post can inspire you to make small changes that will lead to greater impact.
When you search for ways to become more sustainable it can be daunting. I encourage you to make small changes that fit within your life. Don’t worry about being perfect all the time. For us, it was starting with plastic straws. I used to drink from a plastic straw with all my beverages at home and out.
In the year of 2017, Americans used about 390 million plastic straws each day. This data comes from the market research firm, Freedonia Group.
First step was replacing my plastic straws at home with reusable metal ones. (Bonus: you save money in the long run.) After about a year of this new habit, I started to refuse straws at restaurants as well. We do keep a set of straws and bamboo utensils in the car, so if I want one I have it. Just by refusing and replacing plastic straws I personally have saved thousands of plastic straws going to the oceans and landfills.
MORE THINGS TO SWITCH OUT
Here are some simple things to consider switching up in your life. Remember small changes can lead to great impact.
Using reusable coffee cups and water bottles vs. plastic.
While coffee cups are made of paper, the inside is usually lines with plastic or wax that is hard to recycle and ends up in the landfill or the oceans. Consider investing in a coffee tumbler and bringing it to your coffee shops. Most shops will offer a cup discount.
Plastic water bottles most often are not recycled and liter our oceans and beaches. It’s easy to bring a refillable bottle and way more cost effective. For parties and events, we opt for aluminium water since aluminium is easier to recycle and often is.
Choosing glass vs. plastic
There have been times where I needed to purchase water so I try to find glass bottles. Glass bottles can be repurposed and recycled properly. We also opt for glass containers when shopping for food items.
Typically we repurpose all our glass bottles for food storage or vases in the home. You can also bring clean empty glass containers to your local refill shops to donate for those who may need it.
Use what you have already
It’s important to remember in an age of over consumerism to use what we have already. While your reusable water bottle maybe plastic, use it till it’s unusable before purchasing a new one. Be creative and find what you have lying around the house.
Supporting brands like adidas and their efforts on sustainable practices
Most importantly we as consumers have a voice. We can vote with our dollars. While brands may not be perfect we should support the practices we believe in by voting with our dollar. This shows the brands what consumers want.
adidas is a brand that is trying to improve sustainability efforts with their Parley line. If you need new shoes or athletic gear, I encourage you to check them out. Remember sometimes you have to matter before you can change how things are done. I commend larger brands for taking steps to make change.
