CLEAN MAKEUP FAVORITES TOP 5

Did you know that our body absorbs 60 percent of what is on it? SIXTY PERCENT! Recently, I interviewed a clean beauty expert from Credo Beauty as a guest on the podcast. We discussed what are some of the most toxic ingredients to avoid and what to swap out first.  I want to continue the discussion of clean beauty because I believe it’s a very important topic. Here in the U.S. we have minimal regulations and many companies are taking advantage of it. As consumers we have to be smarter about what we buy and decide for ourselves what we’d like to avoid in our beauty products. For this post, I am collaborating with Jenn from Beauty By Jelly Bean.  Make sure to check out her post about her favorite clean skincare products. Read Jenn’s post here. I’ll be talking about my top five favorite clean makeup products.

WHAT IS CLEAN MAKEUP?

For the purpose of this post, I have focused on products that are free from:

  • Phthalates
  • Artificial fragrances
  • Petrochemicals or mineral oils
  • Parabens
  • Animal Testing

Everyone has to decide what to avoid for themselves. After doing some research and speaking to experts in the field, these are ingredients I do my best to avoid for my everyday beauty routine. While I am not 100 percent clean or cruelty free, I make a conscious effort to avoid petrochemicals and parabens.  Also I like to highlight cruelty free brands here and on my channel. It can be overwhelming to eliminate all toxins at once. The best advice I have, is to do your research and start with an everyday item. My first clean transition was deodorant back in college. Recently I started to look for clean makeup options for my everyday staples.

5 FAVORITE CLEAN MAKEUP PRODUCTS

The clean beauty market has come a long way with gorgeous packaging and high performance products. As consumers become savvier and more demanding, brands are taking notice. Here are five of my favorite clean makeup products I use daily. Makeup can be a hard one to switch out. We have some amazing product out there and finding clean makeup can be a challenge. Hopefully this post will kickstart your search.

clean beauty schmidt's natural deodorant

Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant

Okay I know this is technically not a makeup item, but seriously consider switching out your mainstream anti perspirant or deodorant for a clean option. You can read my natural deodorant blog post here to learn more about the process. Antiperspirant and deodorants are full of chemicals and synthetic fragrances that can wreak havoc on our bodies. Read more here.

Most recently I have fallen in love with this Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant in Bergamot + Lime. I’ve tried tons of natural options and this is by far the best natural deodorant I’ve used. I switched to natural deodorants back in 2005 starting with crystal rock salt and haven’t looked back since. A tip when switching over, give your body 7-10 days adjustment period. You might stick for the first week, so try switching out when you don’t have to be too close to anyone.

Schmidt’s formula is 100% free of aluminum, parabens, propylene-glycol, phthalates, gluten, and artificial fragrance. There are a ton of options and even one for sensitive skin that is made without baking soda. Shop Schmidt’s here at Target ($5-$9).  Learn more about Schmidt’s here.

clean makeup favorites kosas lipstick

Kosas Lipstick

If you decided to switch out any of your makeup, consider the products you use on your lips and eyes. These are applied near direct openings that go into your body. While our body absorbs 60% of what’s on it, we are likely to absorb a lot more of our lip products and eye makeup.

A recent discovery and now new found favorite are the Kosas lipsticks. These are high performance clean lipsticks at $24. You can buy them on Revolve here.

The pigmentation is incredible and they last on the lips a surprisingly long time. With the sleek packaging and variety of shades, you won’t even miss your old toxic lipsticks. By the way they smell amazing! Kind of like chocolate 🙂

Kosås Does Not Contain

Parabens
Pthalates
BHA/BHT
Mineral Oil
Propylene Glycol
Polyethylene Glycol
Phenoxyethanol
“Fragrance”
Petrolatum
Vitamin A, retinoids, or retinoid derivatives

*All products are gluten, egg, nut, soy and cruelty free.

clean mascara Well People

W3LL People Expressionist Mascara

I’m a huge skeptic when it comes to clean mascaras. Therefor when I discovered the w3ll people mascara and loved it, I was shocked! I know how awful the ingredients in traditional mascaras are for us, but honestly I can’t live without my dratic, voluminous lashes. Mascara is one of my must have makeup products, so when I discovered this clean option that performed just as well as my not so clean ones, I squealed in excitement. Literally.

W3ll people products are: 100% cruelty-free, petroleum-free, paraben free, gluten-free, coal tar-free, aluminum-free, fiber-free.

Because this mascara is petroleum free, paraben free, and tar free, it truly is a miracle product. The spiky rubberized applicator distributes just the right amount of product each time. Also this mascara has yet to clump on me even after 2 months and 3 coats per eye, per application! I have had very expensive mascaras start to clump on me after one month of use. It is not waterproof, but unless I’m crying or decide to go swimming, it’s not an issue for me. Watch my May Favorites video where I talk more about this beauty.

You can shop W3LL People Expressionist Mascara at The DermStore here for $21.99 and learn more about W3ll People here.

Loved your post so much! I recently read that if you detox your armpit area first with clay and apple cider vinegar a few times a week for 1-3 weeks after stopping using regular deodorant it will help eliminate the smell and you shouldn’t smell going forward… I haven’t tried it yet but I look forward to testing this out and then trying Schmits deodorant! I’m planning to pick up some more w3ll people mascara! What’s your favorite green beauty foundation?

Oh that’s a great tip! I’d love an update on how it works out. Yes, the mascara is so good!

I’ve been loving the Kaejer Weis Foundation and RMS Un Coverup, but I like a light coverage. The full review on the foundation will be up on Monday 🙂

You are so right- we need to be more conscious of what products we are putting on our skin and what’s in them. Thank you for all the product suggestions! I will definitely try some of them out:)
