With every seasonal change, I find my skincare routine varies. The basics are always there: cleanse, tone, treat, hydrate, and protect. Depending on the weather, my diet, and what my skin is like, I have to adjust accordantly. If you watch my channel, you might have noticed the improvement of my skin. I can finally say after about 30 years of messing around with tons of skincare products, visiting countless spas, doctors, and speaking with skincare professionals, I have finally figured out some key tips for good skincare. Here are my five summer skincare tips for clear and radiant skin.
With summer in full swing, your skin might be experiencing breakouts and God forbid, too much sun, leading to premature aging. Hopefully by following a few simple summer skincare tips, you can avoid any aggravation and keep your skin glowing all summer long. It’s hot and we all want to wear less clothing and less makeup. Let’s make sure your summer skincare is strong.
Summer Skincare Tip #1 – oil based cleanser
CLEANSE! I cannot stress enough how important it is to cleanse your skin properly each night. Many peo
ple claim physical SPF will break them out. It can and will if you do not remove it properly. I w
ear a physical SPF of 30 or higher everyday. For the summer time, I will go as high as SPF 50. I encourage you to use an oil
based cleanser to break down the SPF at the end of the day.
Think about how dirty the windshield of your car gets after a few hours of driving. Now think about all the smog, dust, pollen, and sweat that your face is exposed to. Never go to bed without properly removing your SPF, makeup, and the day’s pollution. If you do not like the feel of an oil based cleaner, I would recommend trying the COSMEDIX Purity Solution cleanser. This is an Argan and olive oil based cleanser perfect for all skin types, even acne prone. The COSMEDIX Purity Solution cleanser is the first where I can use alone without feeling any remaining residue. You can use this cleanser in the mornings as well.
“But I have oily skin”
you say? Oily skin is due to your skin believing it is not hydrated enough or producing enough oils, so your body tells it to produce more. How do you get rid of oily skin? First off, try balancing your skin vs. drying it out with chemicals and acids. Traditional ways of “fixing” oily skin is to dry it out, which in turns produces more oils and caused you to need more of these products to keep the oils at bay. For long term “fixes” it’s all about balance. Remember, oily skin is less likely to wrinkle, so that’s a bonus for having oily skin peeps. My mom has always had oily skin. She is now 73 years old and literally does not have any wrinkles.
Summer Skincare Tip #2 – toners in spray bottles
Toners help balance the skin’s PH after cleansing and preps the skin for product. I recommend using a fresh and cooling toner with no alcohol, like the COSMEDIX Benefit Balance Toner, with soothing ingredients like green tea, aloe vera, and chamomile. Toners that come in a spray bottle are my personal favorite. They are super refreshing and can be used throughout the day to add hydration and freshen up your skin and makeup.
Summer Skincare Tip #3 – serums
The right serums are your skin’s best friend. Be aware of the ingredients and packaging. Skincare ingredients breaks down when exposed to air and light. Deci de what you’d like to improve and look for a serum that will help you achieve your skincare goals. If you splurge on nothing else, splurge on a good serum fit for your skincare needs.
I have been using the COSMEDIX radiance serum and simply brilliant serum for about 2 months. Radiance has been my go to everyday serum. I’ll switch off and use simply brilliant 2-3 time a week to treat pigmentation.
In my teens when I had oily skin, my esthetician told me I had dehydrated skin. As I’ve aged, I have developed dry patches along my cheeks and chin, with an oily noise… yay! (sarcasm). Radiance is a nourishing serum that helps retain moisture while reversing the visible appearance of aging, and lackluster skin. I notice an immediate difference when I apply 1 to 2 pumps after my toner.
Simply brilliant helps me treat the hyper pigmentation and photodamage of my skin. There is Chirally Correct L-Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid which defend skin against age-accelerating free radicals. I personally do not like to use acids everyday, which is why I only use simple brilliant 2-3 times a week as a treatment vs. daily. Your skin can be overloaded with products. I recommend sticking to a routine that is simple and incorporating new products or treatments sparingly. Trust me, I learned the hard way.
Summer Skincare Tip #4 – eye cream
Wear an eye cream day and night. Just do it! I’ve been wearing an eye cream since high school. I’m currently in my very
early 30’s. This is the proof you need to start wearing eye cream! I remember in collage, my roommate walked in on me getting ready and was laughing at me for applying eye cream. She said “you’re 20! You don’t need an eye cream.” My response? By the time I need it, it’ll be too late.
Wrinkles will not just disappear from use of topical creams or serums. You can hydrate the skin and do light acid treatments to minimize wrinkles, fine lines, and damage, but it takes a lot of work, patience, and money. So, find an eye cream that works for you and start using it!
I suffer from minor fine lines due to dehydration and darkness under the eyes. The COSMEDIX eye genius is light weight and helps with dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines. While my eyes are dehydrated, many eye creams can be too heavy for me. The COSMEDIX eye genius is the perfect amount of light, but effective hydration for my eye area.
Summer Skincare Tip #5 – SPF
This should go without explanation. I have a full video explaining the difference between chemical and physical SPF. Why I prefer physical SPF. Along with product recommendations. The video is a few months old. The information is the same, but I have discovered a few more products that I love and will have an update video soon.
Skincare is important, there is a lot of information out there, but when it comes down to it, do what works for you and your skin. I know the better my skin is, the more confident I feel.
What are some of your summer skincare tips and tricks? I’d love to know.
