Skin Care at 40, The Best Skin Care Products

This blog post is about the best skin care products for skin care at 40.

My 40th birthday is rapidly approaching this Spring and while I’m conflicted about turning 40, I’m damn proud of my skin thanks to consistency in using a few key products.

Luckily I started young with my skin care journey. We’re not talking crazy actives, but I started with a simple three step skin care routine around my pre teen years.

Simplicity in Skin Care

From as far back as I can remember, I always cleansed my face before bed. I remember my mom using a warm washcloth to wipe my face each night and each morning. As I started to notice those around me I wanted a little more.

This is where drugstore cleansers and moisturizers came in. I vaguely remember using Aveeno, Neutrogena, and the likes for a while before the Clinique three step system became my ride or die.

Soon after I discovered Shiseido skin care products and became obsessed with them. It’s also thanks to Shiseido that I started wearing a daily SPF. While I wasn’t big into makeup yet, I loved a tinted moisturizer and would wear one every morning before school.

I swear this is what saved my skin from those years of outdoor practices and lunches in the So Cal sun.

When I look back at each skin care routine I’ve had. Each one consisted of a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer with SPF during the day.

The Best Skin Care Products

Will be the skin care you will use consistently because consistency over time is the key to success in everything. You’ll notice most of the products I use and empty consistently are based around the simplicity of my skin care routine from almost 25 years ago or longer.

During my hormonal teen years, I started to incorporate an exfoliant to help keep my pores clear.

In my 20’s till now I consistently use a quality vitamin C and an eye cream. Remember skin care is best used for preventative measures and NOTHING will replace a good SPF habit.

Around my 30’s is when I started using more actives like retinol on and off, but the key has always been focusing on quality products that I can use consistently.

Product Empties

Here are my recent skincare product empties that prove my point.

The Treatments

When it comes to preventative skincare products I like to focus on antioxidants and exfoliation. Growing up I had oily skin and as I’ve aged my skin has become more combination, but any dryness or dullness comes from lack of exfoliation.

Naturium Vitamin C Super Super Serum Plus

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know I’m a HUGE fan of Naturium skincare products because they are formulated so beautifully and priced at an affordable price point for the quality of skincare you are getting.

Vitamin C was the first skincare product I started to incorporate as a treatment in my early 20’s. Vitamin C is a great antioxidant to help with any environmental stressors your skin will deal with throughout the day to help it look brighter.

Remember oxidation is the result of glycation (internal) and environmental stress (external), so antioxidants help minimize the damage of time and life.

This serum is beautifully formulated to protect and brighten as well as packaged to preserve the ingredients efficacy. Works beautifully as a first step after toner.

Naturium BHA Liquid Exfoliant 2%

My first esthetician Claire taught me the importance of exfoliation in my teens. I swear it was thanks to her that I had relatively clear skin throughout my hormonal years.

With oiler skin and my genetics, I have larger pores which can fill up with blackheads. Using a chemical exfoliant like the Naturium once or twice a week helps keep my trouble areas clear.

While you cannot shrink your pores, you can keep them clear which will give them a smaller appearance.

Virgin Skin Youth Serum

Code of Harmony is like yummy rich truffles to your skin if your skin was a food. I’ve emptied two of these serums within six months. Perfect if you are sensitive to retinoids or other actives.

I highly recommend checking out Code of Harmony for any skincare products as well as their facial treatments.

The Protection

I would say moisturizer and SPF is going to be your biggest tool against aging. Finding the right moisturizer for your skin is important as it seals in your skin care and provides protection.

By now you should know the benefits of sunscreen and why proper consistent use of sunscreen is so important for your skin health as well as avoiding any discoloration and wrinkles.

Remember preventing is easier and more cost effective than trying to fix an existing problem.

Versed Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream

This is the perfect affordable drugstore moisturizer for those with oilier complexions. Works beautifully under makeup and especially during warmer months.

Versed has quickly become a favorite affordable skincare brand available at Target.

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics (SPF50+ PA++++)

My absolute favorite sunscreen! This is my second empty only because I ran out and it was sold out for so long. This is unlike any sunscreen available to us in the U.S. with a superior filter that feels like a rich moisturizer that absorbs down and works beautifully under makeup.

For oilier skin, you can use this as your one and done moisturizer and SPF.

Do be very careful to buy directly from a verified third party seller to avoid counterfeit products.

The Body

Our body is covered in skin, so why not find good products for it as well?

Kosas Sport

One of my favorite aluminum free deodorants that WORK! Kosas uses AHAs to help fight bacteria under the arms which typically cause the odor. I’ve lost count on how many of these I’ve emptied, but it’s a continued favorite.

First Aid Beauty Ingrown Hair Pads

If you deal with ingrown hairs or razor bumps, these pre soaked chemical exfoliating pads are great for any trouble areas.

Great for travel especially.
